Thank You, Laramie County Library System for Hosting the Commissioner Candidates

The candidates for Laramie County Commissioner were invited to a forum at the Laramie County Public Library this morning, July 9, 2024. Four of the seven candidates were there to speak about their views on several different topics. The candidates were asked questions about our understanding of the county funds provided for the library's operation budget, our stance on intellectual freedom, and the role of libraries in ensuring access to diverse viewpoints and information, particularly on controversial topics and topics in between.

Public libraries are more than just an equalizer; they are a cornerstone of our community. No other institution has such a broad social and economic impact on the communities they serve. They ensure that the underserved have the same access to materials, services, and meeting spaces as those more financially secure. They also benefit the community by promoting literacy and education through programs like the summer reading program and cultural events, offering the underserved access to technology through the computer center, genealogy materials, and numerous other benefits to the community.  The library provides lifelong learning for people aged 0 to 100+ and is an irreplaceable cornerstone in the community.

Thank you to the administration and staff of the library for inviting me to join your staff meeting. I greatly appreciate your interest in the commissioner election and the opportunity to discuss the vital role of libraries in our community.
